چکیده

This thesis studies the performance of both opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) and spectrum sharing (SS) cognitive radio networks (CRNs) using cross-layer design (CLD) approaches in order to provide reliable and optimum packet transmission at the medium access control (MAC) layer with quality of service (QoS) guarantees, to optimize the secondary user (SU) performance given the primary user (PU) protection and to realize the impact of imperfect spectrum sensing at the MAC layer. The reliable and optimum packet transmission at the MAC layer with QoS guarantees is accomplished by the combination of adaptive modulation with hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) protocol in OSA CRNs. The SU’s performance is maximized by formulating a convex optimization problem for the SU’s capacity over the power control (PoC) and spectrum sensing (SpSe) that is solved with an iterative subgradient method which results in optimal power allocation and sensing threshold selection. Finally, the impact of imperfect SpSe at the MAC layer is realized by modelling the Carrier Sensing Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) and the SpSe as two state Markov processes and thus obtaining the joint steady state distribution that encompasses the parameters of both mechanisms.

A Review of Cross-layer Design in Dynamic Spectrum Access for Cognitive Radio Networks

Cognitive Radio (CR) is an intelligent radio that can dynamically access the radio spectrum. Secondary users in Cognitive Radio Network (CRN) can access the licensed spectrum without causing harmful interference to primary users. The performance of cognitive radio networking functionalities depends on the properties of the spectrum band in use. This necessitates a crosslayer design in the entir...

Cross-layer Modeling and Optimization of Multi-channel Cognitive Radio Networks under Imperfect Channel Sensing

In this paper, we consider a multi-channel cognitive radio network with multiple secondary users (SUs) and analyze the performance of users in the network. We assume primary users (PUs) adopt the automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol at the medium access control layer. We have two main goals. Our first goal is to develop a cross-layer performance model of the cognitive radio network by consid...

Spectrum Assignment in Cognitive Radio Networks Using Fuzzy Logic Empowered Ants

The prevalent communications networks suffer from lack of spectrum and spectrum inefficiency. This has motivated researchers to develop cognitive radio (CR) as a smart and dynamic radio access promised solution. A major challenge to this new technology is how to make fair assignment of available spectrum to unlicensed users, particularly for smart grids communication. This paper introduces an i...

Cross-layer Design of CSMA/CA with Spectrum Sensing for Cognitive Radio Networks

We devise a cross-layer design (CLD) of carrier sensing multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) at the medium access control (MAC) layer with spectrum sensing (SpSe) at the physical layer for cognitive radio networks (CRNs). The proposed CLD relies on a Markov chain model with a state pair containing both the SpSe and the CSMA/CA with exponential backoff from which we derive the tran...
